Aston Villa target loan switch for Chelsea striker

Aston Villa are hoping to land Chelsea striker Patrick Bamford on a season-long loan, according to the Birmingham Mail.

Former Blues boss Roberto Di Matteo awaits word on whether Chelsea will allow Bamford to make his way to Villa Park, with the Championship club desperate to land a striker that has the capability to surge them back to the Premier League.

Bamford began his professional career at Nottingham Forest, before a transfer deadline day switch to Chelsea on January 31 2012. In the four years since arriving at Stamford Bridge, Bamford has yet to make an appearance for The Blues, instead having plied his trade at numerous EFL clubs on loan.

Most notably, Bamford rose to prominence after bagging 19 goals in 43 appearances with then Championship side Middlesbrough in the 2014-15 season, however was unable to guide Boro to promotion to the Premier League.

Two Premier League loans to Crystal Palace and Norwich last season ultimately proved fruitless for the 22-year-old, who made 15 appearances combined for the two clubs, failing to score a goal.

However, a return to the EFL with Aston Villa could reignite Bamford’s rich vein of goal-scoring form the youngster demonstrated in previous loan periods with Championship clubs.

Villa eagerly await word on whether Bamford himself will accept a loan switch with the Midlands club this summer. Capturing Bamford’s signature would significantly bolster The Villans’ attacking arsenal, boosting Di Matteo’s chances of securing an immediate promotion with his new side.
