Gillingham boost squad with two new signings

Gillingham have added to their squad after signing Lee Martin on a free transfer from Millwall and Deji Oshilaja on loan for the season from Cardiff City as confirmed by the club website.

The Gills are looking to get the extra pieces that will help them get promoted after a disappointing second half of the season saw them nosedive from an automatic promotion spot to being just outside the play offs. Manager Justin Edinburgh will be hoping that the signings of Martin and Oshilaja will be key as they go again this season.

Martin, a 29-year-old winger, struggled to hold down a first team spot at Millwall despite their relegation to League 1 and in the end was shipped out on loan to Northampton Town where he helped them get promoted from League 2 as champions. He has signed a two year contract with the club.

Oshilaja, a 23-year-old defender, will already be familiar to Gillingham fans having ended last season loan with the club where he made ten appearances though he was unable to get the Gills into the play offs. This season he will be seen as a replacement for John Egan who completed a move to Brentford after his contract expired.

After the signing was completed, Martin said: “I’m delighted to be here,”

“I spoke to a lot of the players, especially Wrighty [midfielder Josh Wright] and the manager, and they were both brilliant.
“The manager and I hit it off straight away; he sold the club to me. He’s got lots of ideas about the season ahead, he wants me to show my experience in the changing room and help the other lads.”
Oshilaja added: “It’s a good feeling to be back, I always said I felt at home here,”
“I get on well with everyone; the staff have been good to me so it was a no-brainer to return.”
“You always want to build on what you did last season, and with the team we’ve got I think we can push on.”
