Experienced Atletico defender set to join Newcastle

Lee Ryder, the Chief Sports Writer for The Chronicle, understands that Newcastle United are set to sign Atletico Madrid defender Jesus Gamez. This comes a day after long-serving club captain Fabricio Coloccini left the club to join San Lorenzo in Argentina.

It remains to be seen how much Newcastle will pay for Gamez. The defender, who has played at centre back on occasions, played 16 times for the Champions League runners-up last season. This included an away victory at Sevilla and a narrow defeat to Barcelona.

The 31-year-old possesses plenty of experience on both the Spanish and European game. Prior to his spell at Atletico, Gamez played well over 100 times for Malaga. He also has four caps for the Spain Under-23 side. He played at the Mediterranean Games in 2005.

He mainly plays as a right back, so perhaps isn’t a direct replacement for Coloccini. Nevertheless, it is still something of a big transfer coup for Newcastle United. Undoubtedly the presence of fellow Spaniard Rafa Benitez as manager played a major part in this.

Gamez played in the Champions League last season, but is happy to swap all of that for regular football in the Championship. He won’t join the Premier League next season, despite the recent links to Everton and West Ham. More details will emerge about this deal as the day progresses.
