Spurs monitor Newcastle midfielder

Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Newcastle United’s midfielder Giorgio Wijnaldum, according to The Telegraph.

Wijnaldum moved to Tyneside last summer, signing from dutch outfit PSV Eindhoven for a reported £14.5million.

He signed for the club on a five year deal, but his future was thrown into jeopardy following Newcastle’s relegation from the Premiership.

Speaking earlier this summer, Wijnaldum was uncertain whether or not he had a future at the club.

“Of course I want to play at the highest level I possibly can,” said the Dutch international.

“Not everything goes they way you want it to. I guess I’ll just see what happens.”

Wijnaldum enjured a mixed first season in English football.

He scored 11 goals for the club during their infamous season.

Four of these goals came against Norwich City during a 6-2 victory, but he also bagged against Manchester United and West Ham.

He finished the season as the club’s top goalscorer.

It is believed that Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino is looking to sign an attacking midfielder this summer, and Wijnaldum is at the top of his list.

The midfielder has been capped 30 times by the Netherlands, scoring six goals, including a World Cup goal in their 3-0 victory over Brazil in 2014.

Newcastle fans will be optimistic about keeping hold of their play maker, as Rafael Benitez has been told he us under no pressure to sell any of his ‘better players’.
