Sheffield United sign Oldham Athletic defender

Sheffield United have signed James Wilson from Oldham Athletic on a free transfer as confirmed by the club website.

After helping the Latics stay in League 1 after another relegation battle, the 27-year-old defender was out of contract and decided to leave the club and sign a two year contract with the club.

The Blades had faced a battle to sign Wilson with Shrewsbury Town, Rochdale and Leyton Orient all interested in signing him but the temptation of being involved in a battle for promotion to League 1 meant sure that he would sign with Sheffield United.

Oldham was the first club where Wilson, not to be confused with the other James Wilson who’s a striker for Manchester United, was ever a regular after he signed for them in 2014. Before that he had spent eight years at Bristol City but he only made 35 appearances for the Robins and was shipped out on loan to clubs like Brentford and Cheltenham Town.

After Wilson signed for the club, United manager Chris Wilder said: “James is an athletic, mobile centre half and knows this division,”

“He turned down a contract at Oldham and had other options but we’ve had him with us for a few days, had a good look at him and he will be a good addition to our squad.”
