Sheff Utd among four eyeing free agent Welsh centre back

The Sheffield Star understands that Sheffield United are monitoring the situation of defender James Wilson. His contract at Oldham Athletic has expired and is highly likely to play elsewhere next season. Shrewsbury Town, Rochdale and Leyton Orient are also interested.

The Welshman played over 100 times for the Latics in two-and-a-half seasons at Boundary Park. Wilson impressed enough during that time to have clubs now queuing up for his signature. It remains to be seen where he will play his football next season.

It is well-known that Chris Wilder is particularly keen on strengthening his defences with the Blades. MK Dons centre back Kyle McFadzean is also another known transfer target of his. The likes of Jay McEveley and Alex Baptiste all left over the summer, leaving a void in the back four. Wilson is one of the many options Wilder is considering.

Wilson has been capped with the Wales national side and at Under-19 and Under-21 level. He can also count the likes of Bristol City, Brentford and Cheltenham Town as former clubs of his. It has certainly been a summer of change at Oldham, headlined by John Sheridan leaving to join Notts County. Wilson is now technically a free agent, and shouldn’t have a problem in attracting potential suitors.
