Championship trio to exploit low Birmingham winger release clause

A £1.1million release clause in the contract of Birmingham City winger David Cotterill has alerted the attentions of three Championship clubs. The BBC reports that Cardiff City, Reading and Sheffield Wednesday are all interested in the Welsh international.

The 28-year-old is currently away at Euro 2016 with Semi-Finalists Wales. On his return, there is the chance he could be playing for a different club. He has spent the last two seasons at St Andrews, playing 75 matches.

He has yet to feature in the European Championships so far. He still remains a player that is very much in demand this summer. His delivery both in normal play and on set pieces provides him with a useful attribute, making him attractive to on-looking managers and scouts.

He signed from Doncaster Rovers in 2014. Since July 2008, he has played for six different clubs and would like some stability. He came through the ranks at Bristol City, before going to play for clubs such as Wigan, Sheff Utd, Swansea and Barnsley.

It remains to be seen where he will be playing his football next season. He certainly has three admirers in the form of Carlos Carvalhal, Paul Trollope and Jaap Stam. Birmingham are in a vulnerable situation because of the release clause. It could all boil down to exactly what Cotterill himself wants to do next season.
