Derby to challenge Wolves for former midfielder as coach

The Derby Telegraph reports that Derby County manager Nigel Pearson wants to bring ex-midfielder Inigo Idiakez back to the iPro Stadium as a coach. He is currently the manager of the Leicester City Under-16 side. Wolverhampton Wanderers are also interested as well.

The 42-year-old Spaniard impressed during his playing spell at the Rams. The silky, ball playing midfielder was cultured in possession. He regularly found the back of the net from free kicks as well. Idiakez worked with Pearson when he was in charge of the Foxes.

Idiakez spent most of his playing career in his native Spain. He played over 250 times for Real Sociedad, scoring just shy of 50 goals in the process. After spells at Real Oviedo and Rayo Vallecano, he made the move to England. He joined Derby on a free in July 2004. Two years later he signed for Southampton, before a loan spell at QPR saw him kick his final ball as a professional player.

He is currently working with the Premier League champions in their youth structure. The chance to move onto the outright coaching position, albeit at a league below, may be an attractive proposition for him. Wolves are also interested, but the fact he has history with Derby may give them a slight edge.

For those Derby fans who may have forgot or may not remember Idiakez during his playing days, check out the video below!
