Di Matteo hoping to persuade Watford keeper to join Villa

Aston Villa manager Robert Di Matteo is hoping to persuade Watford’s Costel Pantilimon to join his team according to a report from the Mirror.

The 29-year-old goalkeeper currently warms the bench for the Hornets with Heurelho Gomes being the usual number one and after an impressive first season back in the Premier League, it’s unlikely that he is going to be dislodged from that spot.

So Villa head coach Di Matteo is hoping that he can lure Pantilimon to Villa Park by offering him regular first team football. The club have been looking for a new number one after brad Guzan went through a much criticised season and looks set for the exit and they have already approached Italian shot stoppers Nicola Leali and Pierluigi Gollini over a potential move.

And while Pantilimon may be tempted to leave Watford for Aston Villa so he can become the number one of a team, there is one issue. He is on 50K a week wages at Vicarage Road and he would have to take a drop in his wages should he want to move to Aston Villa. That means Pantilimon will get a straight choice between more money or more first team football.
