Benfica striker interests Sheffield Wednesday

The Sheffield Star say that reports in Portugal suggest that Sheffield Wednesday could make a move for Benfica striker Nelson Oliveira. The 24-year-old spent last season in the Championship whilst on loan with Nottingham Forest.

It is understood that playing for a Portuguese manager, in the form of Owls boss Carlos Carvalhal, is an attractive proposition for Oliveira. He scored nine goals for the City Ground club last season.

Portugal top flight champions Benfica are said to be open to offers for Oliveira. Since signing in 2010, he has only started two league games for the club. He is likely to leave this summer. It remains to be seen if Sheff Wed are prepared to make their move.

Sheffield Wednesday have been linked with a number of players based in Portugal over the last few weeks. Sporting Lisbon’s Ryan Gauld is a prime example of this. Monaco striker Ivan Cavaleiro, who is Portuguese, is another player mentioned over a move to Hillsborough.

It is well known that Wednesday are looking to sign another striker this summer. They are hoping to sign Fulham’s Ross McCormack, but agreeing a fee is proving an issue. Steven Fletcher has already penned a four-year contract following his release from Premier League side Sunderland.
