According to France Football, Championship side Aston Villa are interested in signing Bordeaux defender Frederic Guilbert. Sunderland of the Premier League are also said to be in the running to sign him.
He remains under contract at the Ligue 1 club for another season. He hasn’t signed an extension and as from January 1st, he can discuss a move with another club for free. Several clubs are said to be interested in Guilbert.
The 21-year-old has made 40 appearances for Bordeaux, who have won the French top flight on six occasions.
Jocelyn Gourvennec, the Bordeaux manager, is set to meet up with Guilbert over the coming days to discuss his future. He is very much a key player at the club but they ideally don’t want to lose him on a free transfer. There is every possibility they may look to get a fee over the summer.
He turns 22 in December and a move to English football at that stage of his career could be too good to turn down. Perhaps Sunderland have the edge in that they can offer Premier League football. However Aston Villa have good finances and are extremely ambitious in their future plans. It is a case of watch this space regarding this potential move.
