Italian youth international set to sign for Bristol City

The Bristol Post reports that Bristol City are set to sign free agent forward Diego De Girolamo on a one-year contract. The 20-year-old Italian was previously on the books at League One side Sheffield United.

De Girolamo has also experienced loan moves away during his time at Bramall Lane. Northampton Town and York City both saw the youngster play on a handful of occasions. He only made ten first-team appearances for the Blades.

Although the Italian Under-20 international has most likely been signed for the development squad, he will originally train with the first-team. Lee Johnson believes that the player is one with a very bright future. It wasn’t that long ago that he was linked with Premier League giants Manchester United.

The Chesterfield-born attacker qualifies for Italy through his father. He has also been capped at Under-18, Under-19 and Under-20 levels.

His league debut came in February 2013 but he will now be hoping to step up his progression even further. He is likely to want first-team opportunities, but he’ll know he’ll need to earn that right. That all depends on how he does in pre-season.

Bristol City are keen on strengthening their Under-21 squad ahead of the new season. The exception for De Girolamo is that he is relatively experienced for his age. That means he is more likely to be considered for the first-team fold.
