Women’s round up – Villa hammered by ruthless Man City

FA Women’s Super League 2 club Aston Villa Ladies were knocked out of the FA WSL Continental Tyres Cup on Saturday afternoon after suffering a heavy 8-0 home defeat at the hands of Manchester City Women.

FA Women’s Super League 1 league leaders Manchester City took just four minutes to open the scoring in Sutton Coldfield when Nikita Parris slotted in from the penalty spot.

With just 18 minutes on the clock, matters got worse for Aston Villa when Chloe Jones was dismissed for a handball on the goal-line and City midfielder Jane Ross stuck away the resulting penalty kick for the second goal of the game.

From that point forward, Villa always looked unlikely to get back into the game and Nikita Parris added her second goal of the game inside the opening 20 minutes before Tessel Middag sent City into the break with a 4-0 lead with a goal on her full debut for the club.

The second half saw the visitors dominate once more and Nikita Parris completed her hat trick on the hour but to their credit Villa held firm until the last 10 minutes when goals from substitute Daphne Corboz, Jane Ross and Jill Scott handed City a comprehensive 8-0 victory as Nick Cushing’s side cruised into the next round of the competition.
