Ross McCormack

Sheff Wed quoted £15million to sign Championship striker

According to The Mirror, Fulham have told Sheffield Wednesday that they will need to pay £15million should they want to sign striker Ross McCormack. The Owls today signed fellow Scottish striker Steven Fletcher on a four-year deal.

A clause in McCormack’s contract expired today, whereby he could speak to other clubs if a £12million was offered. It was then widely expected Fulham would have to lower their asking price for the Scot after a lack of sufficient bids. Instead, they have increased their demands.

Fulham of course hold all of the aces. It remains to be seen if they want to cash in on the player and use the funds to strengthen their squad. He provides guaranteed goals though, 42 since signing from Leeds in July 2014.

Owls manager Carlos Carvalhal is a big fan of McCormack. He is prepared to break the club record to sign him. That is currently the £5.7million they paid Celtic to sign Paolo Di Canio in 1997. Sheff Wed reportedly offered £11.5million, 500k less than the escape clause. With that now expired, Fulham want £15million.

The Craven Cottage club are desperate to make some kind of profit on his sale. He signed from Leeds United for £10.75million. They want to make a ‘sizeable’ improvement on that fee at the very least. The player only signed a new deal not that long ago, so the club shouldn’t be under pressure to sell.
