Former striker may return to Northampton Town

Newcastle United’s Ivan Toney could make a return to his former club Northampton Town according to a report from the Northampton Herald & Post.

The 20-year-old striker came through the Cobblers academy and went on to score 13 goals in 60 appearances, impressing everyone in League 2 with the standard of his performances for his tender age. He became a hero at the Sixfields Stadium for scoring two goals in two games at the end of the 2013/14 season to save them from relegation and dropping into the Vanarama National.

This in the end caught the attention of top teams in the country and last summer he completed a move to Newcastle for £250,000. After playing for their developmental side, he was eventually loaned out to Barnsley and he helped them to get promoted via the play offs.

With Toney looking likely to be loaned back out again this summer, an obvious destination has been his former club and their current manager Rob Page is interested in him making a triumphant return to the club.

He said: “That’s a natural one, isn’t it? He’s been part of the football club and he’s gone on to bigger things.”

“We’ve watched his career and I certainly know about him from last season from his time at Barnsley and I think that’s an obvious name to mention.”

“He’s a fantastic talent – he’s one of maybe two or three that are out there that tickle the fancy at the minute.”

“We’ve got to bring the right person in, whether that’s Toney, whether that’s anybody else. As long as he’s coming in and benefitting this football club, that’s the aim.”
