Former striker set for Oldham Athletic job

Sky Sports understands that Shefki Kuqi has agreed terms with Oldham Athletic over becoming their new manager. He is due to hold final talks with the League One club before he is likely to be appointed.

The 39-year-old played over 40 times for the Latics towards the end of his playing career in the 2011/12 season. Kuqi currently manages in his native Finland at PK-35 Vantaa.

Sean O’Driscoll is also expected to be appointed to the coaching staff as director of football. The former Liverpool assistant and Bournemouth manager would work closely with Kuqi.

Oldham have been on the lookout for a new manager after John Sheridan surprised many by dropping a league to manage at Notts County. Kuqi was also believed to have held talks at rival League One club Port Vale, before Bruno Ribeiro was appointed.

Former Leeds United head coach Steve Evans turned down the opportunity to manage the club earlier this month.

Kuqi had something over a journeyman look to his playing career. It mainly consisted of one or two-year stays at his respective club. He first made the move to England in 2001 with Stockport County. Several moves would follow, including Crystal Palace, Sheffield Wednesday, Ipswich Town and Blackburn Rovers.
