Stevenage winger joins newly promoted Dons

AFC Wimbledon have completed the signing of outgoing Stevenage winger Chris Whelpdale according to Get West London.

The 29 year old Harold Wood born wide man will officially sign for The Dons on 1 July once his contract has expired at Broadhall Way.

Whelpdale has been one of Stevenage’s most impressive performers since signing for the club back in summer 2014 and the player has gone on to make 70 appearances for the club and has scored 16 goals.

The winger started his career in non league football with Maldon Town before moving to Billericay Town. While playing for The Blues in 2007, Whelpdale was spotted by Peterborough United and the player soon made the move to London Road.

Whelpdale helped The Posh to secure back to back promotions from League 2 to the Championship after scoring 13 goals in 143 appearances for the club before joining Gillingham after a successful loan spell at Priestfield Stadium.

The winger added another League 2 promotion to his record during his time in Kent. After making 122 appearances for The Gills scoring 23 goals, Whelpdale joined Stevenage and after spending two years with the club the player has opted for a change of scenery and will make the move to Kingsmeadow.

AFC Wimbledon have not yet announced details of Whelpdale’s contract but it is thought that The Dons have beaten a number of clubs to the player’s signature.
