Antonsson signs on at Leeds United – club and player reaction

When Leeds United didn’t renew the contract of Mirco Antenucci, two things became apparent. The bearded Italian was heading out of the club and Leeds would need a replacement striker. That replacement is Marcus Antonsson, as confirmed by the club today.

Antonsson’s confirmed arrival ends a protracted transfer, with rumours preceding a medical last week. It was a widely-held belief that he had signed, the formalities of today confirming that.

The Swede arrives at Elland Road with him leading the Swedish Allsvenskan with ten goals in 12 games. It will be that form and prowess that Leeds fans will be hoping the first Swede at the club since Teddy Lucic will provide.

Speaking to the club website, the Swedish hitman was ecstatic with the move that brings him to England. In his interview Antonsson said: “It feels fantastic to be here”

“Ever since Leeds came into the picture, it seemed like the perfect choice. I wanted this move as soon as Leeds contacted me.

“Playing in England has been a big dream of mine. Coming to a big club like Leeds is a dream come true and I will work very hard for the team in every game. I will not miss this opportunity.”

Continuing his interview, Antonsson then gave fans an insight into just what kind of player they can expect to see.  Responding to that question, the Swede said: “First of all, I like to score goals. I’m fast inside the box and my big strength is my timing in the box.

“I always try to work very hard for the team – I run a lot of metres – but scoring goals is my main thing.”

It will be goals that the Leeds United fans will be looking for as the Whites try and change their goal-shyness from the last two Championship campaigns.

Leeds United head coach Garry Monk also showed his excitement at bringing the Kalmar striker to Elland Road. Again speaking to the club website, Monk said:“It’s great to make that first signing. In terms of how he plays, Marcus is a different striker to what we’ve got already, so that gives us options up front.

“He’s done exceptionally well over the last couple of seasons. He scores goals, has great movement and he has the mentality to be able to adapt to this league.

“The club has watched a lot of him, I’ve watched a lot of him and I felt he’d be a good fit for Leeds United.”
