On-fire Championship striker gutted by lack of Euro 2016 game time

Speaking to the BBC, Wigan striker Will Grigg has spoken of his disappointment at not playing a single minute for Northern Ireland at Euro 2016. The striker has enjoyed sudden cult-hero status thanks to the ‘Will Grigg’s on Fire’ chant.

The 24-year-old was only one of three players in the whole squad not to play any part. The nation enjoyed a fine run to the knockout stages of the competition.

Heading into the tournament, Grigg enjoyed a fine campaign with Wigan, where he won promotion into the Championship. Nevertheless, his lack of game time didn’t stop the Northern Irish crowd constantly singing their new favourite tune.

Whilst Grigg appreciates the support of the fans, he was gutted not to play a part this summer,

“The song is one thing, but to come to a tournament like this and not play, as a professional footballer, is massively disappointing.”

Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill was frequently asked by journalists if and when Grigg would play. Then he would be asked why when he didn’t. He was slightly ticked at the final time he was asked about why Grigg failed to appear,

“He was our fourth-choice striker.

“That’s unfortunate. He’s a good young player, has a bright future ahead of him but I don’t pick my team around what the supporters sing at the games.”

Now the summer is over with, Grigg can head back to Wigan. He should enjoy plenty of minutes next season under Gary Caldwell.
