Bristol City set to sign Liverpool forward in £2.5million deal

The Liverpool Echo understands that Bristol City are set to sign Liverpool winger Sergi Canos. The 19-year-old failed to reach an agreement over a new contract at Anfield. Several Championship clubs have been interested.

Reports suggest that that Spaniard Canos will seal a £2.5million move to Ashton Gate. The deal would involve a ‘sizeable sell-on clause’ and a buy-back option will also be included.

Last season, Canos spent a season at Griffin Park where he made a total of 39 appearances in league and cup. He scored seven goals in the process. Brentford had hoped to sign him permanently. In addition to those already mentioned, Fulham, QPR and Premier League side Watford were previously interested.

Canos made his Liverpool debut on the final day of last season against West Bromwich Albion. That remains his only first-team appearance with the club.

It is believed that Liverpool were not prepared to meet Canos’ £10,000-a-week wage demands. This is because that wage would see him earn significantly more than other academy graduates with the club.

Nevertheless, this very much looks to be Bristol City’s gain. The fact he already has experience of this level is a major advantage. He is likely to enjoy a bright future in the game.
