Out of contract Shrews defender goes AWOL

Out of contract Shrewsbury Town centre back Nathaniel Knight-Percival has failed to report back to the club for pre-season training according to the Shropshire Star.

The 29 year old Enfield born defender’s contract at the Greenhous Meadow expires this week and despite previously indicating that he would like to remain at the Shropshire club, Knight-Percival has not returned to the club and his whereabouts are unknown.

The Shrews manager Micky Mellon invited out of contract trio James Wesolowski, Mark Halstead and Knight-Percival to all train with the club while they consider their futures. Both Wesolowski and Halstead have returned to training with the club but Knight-Percival has so far declined his manager’s kind offer.

Knight-Percival started his career in non league football with Histon before joining Wrexham for an undisclosed fee believed to be around £5,000. The big defender accrued 312 appearances in non league football scoring 45 goals.

In May 2012, the defender moved into the Football League after signing a two year deal with Peterborough United. Knight-Percival made 56 appearances for The Posh scoring once before being released by the club at the end of his contract.

In summer 2014, the player joined Shrewsbury Town and helped the club to promotion to League 1 in a campaign which saw the Shropshire club concede just 31 league goals all season, the division’s best defensive record.

Knight-Percival has made 77 appearances for The Shrews scoring six goals and the fans’ favourite will be sorely missed should he opt to join another club this summer.
