Reading land this £1.5m rated Dutch midfielder-cum-defender

According to Dutch language football website voetbal international, Reading have landed £1.5m rated Dutch attacking midfielder Joey van den Berg on a free transfer.

Following the capture of ex-Manchester United legend Jaap Stam as manager, it seems that the Royal Berkshire-based side are going ‘Double Dutch’ and have brought van den Berg in on a two-year deal.

Van den Berg has been at SC Heerenveen since 2013, joining the Dutch Eredivisie outfit from  fellow Eredivisie side PEC Zwolle for an undisclosed fee.

Reading’s new man also has leadership experience being captain at the top-tier Dutch side last season. However, as voetbal international report “his expiring contract was not renewed” and Reading took advantage of this.

The website article also went on to say that, “through his intense style of play and transfer free status,” there was interest from former side PEC Zwolle, NEC Nijmegen and FC Twente but Reading is where he is heading.

Harking back to his “intesne style of play,” Reading may well want to take note of this. Van den Berg served four separate suspensions last season: for reaching the yellow card limit and three sendings off (two in the league and one in the Dutch cup) – these bringing his career tally to seven reds.

Here’s something that Reading fans may be looking forward to more than shows of indiscipline and red cards.
