Postman to Euro 2016 starter – the story of Conor Washington

The story of Conor Washington is a remarkable one.

Four years ago, the Northern Irish international was a postman in Cambridgeshire.

Today, he found himself starting in the European Championships against world champions Germany.

But just how has he done it?

Whilst working as a postman, Conor Washington played for St Ives in the United Counties Premier Division.

In 50 games for the club, he scored an astonishing 52 goals.

He caught the eye of Welsh side Newport County, and they paid a measly £5,000 for the striker.

He was at Newport County for two years.

During his time at the club, he scored just five goals in 39 appearances.

Despite his lack of goals, he did enough to attract the attention of League One side Peterborough United, who signed Washington for an undisclosed fee.

Newport County retained a 20% sell-on clause.

Washington got off to a slow start at Peterborough, and many fans began to doubt the new front man.

Chairman Darragh MacAnthony promised that he would deliver, and deliver is what he did.

He scored 27 goals in 82 games, the majority of them coming in the final few months before he left Peterborough.

In January of this year, QPR signed the striker for a fee rumoured to be between £2.5 and £3million.

Washington is yet to score for QPR in 10 appearances.

His foray into international football came through Northern Ireland, who he was eligible to play for thanks to his Grandmother.

Before his call up in March 2016, he had only visited the country once.

He made his debut against Wales, before scoring his first goal in a 1-0 victory of Slovenia.

In his five appearances for his country he’s scored two goals.

Many didn’t expect to see much of him at the Euros this summer, but he’s started two out of Northern Ireland’s three group games, including the 1-0 defeat against the world champions.

Alan Shearer announced that Les Ferdinand believed that Conor Washington was destined for big things, and the 24 year old striker will hope that Ferdinand is right.
