Barnsley beat Peterborough to signing of Colchester star

Barnsley are closing in on the signing of Colchester United midfielder George Moncur. The official club website confirms that they have agreed personal terms to bring the player to Oakwell.

It was widely expected the 22-year-old would leave relegated Colchester United this summer. Bids from both Barnsley and Peterborough United were accepted.

The former West Ham United youngster is all but guaranteed to be playing his football at Oakwell next season. After two seasons at the Colchester Community Stadium, he will now try his hand at Championship football.

The Barnsley Chronicle understands that the deal to bring Moncur to Yorkshire is worth £550,000.

Last season he scored 14 times as Colchester were relegated out of League One. He was still the shining light in a struggling team and has been for a few seasons now.

A statement released by Barnsley reads as follows,

Barnsley Football Club is delighted to confirm Colchester United midfielder George Moncur has agreed personal terms today at Oakwell following agreement of the transfer fee with the U’s.

The sought-after midfielder was a wanted man after an excellent campaign for Colchester United and the 22-year-old will team up with the Reds for pre-season training.

A product of West Ham’s illustrious Academy system, the talented midfielder scored 14 times last season, including twice against the Reds.

Colchester, managed by John McGreal, have also released a statement on their official website. George, son of former West Ham midfielder John Moncur, will report for pre-season with Barnsley in the next few weeks.
