Aston Villa seal deal for Premier League defender

Aston Villa have now officially completed the signing of AFC Bournemouth defender Tommy Elphick. He makes the move for an undisclosed fee, signing a three-year contract with the Championship club.

The 28-year-old leaves Dean Court after four years with Eddie Howe’s men. He played over 130 times for the Cherries. They achieved promotion out of the Championship in 2015 with Elphick playing a major part.

Speaking on the news of his transfer, the former Brighton man expresses his delight at joining a big club such as Aston Villa,

“I am absolutely delighted. As soon as I heard about Villa’s interest, it’s something that turned my head straight away.

“To be able to come here and represent such a fabulous Club, with such a great history, is going to be a real honour for me.”

Elphick becomes the first signing of the Roberto Di Matteo era at Villa Park. The Italian says that signing a player with such experience will be vital. He expects him to play a big role,

“I’m really pleased to bring Tommy to the football Club.

“He is a fantastic player and also a fantastic character which is very important.

“He knows what is required to win promotion to the Premier League from the Championship and that experience will be invaluable.”
