Villa set to confirm deal for Bournemouth defender

Aston Villa are set to confirm the signing of AFC Bournemouth defender Tommy Elphick with the player due in for a medical today, reports the Birmingham Mail.

The defender is believed to have been offered a three-year contract with the West Midlands club, and if he passes his medical he will become Roberto Di Matteo’s first signing as Villa manager.

Elphick has been in-demand by numerous clubs this season, with Championship clubs such as Leeds United reportedly expressing an interest in the defender.

The centre-back featured 14 times in all competitions for the Cherries last season, 12 of those coming in the Premier League, and contributed one goal.

Since making the move to Bournemouth from Brighton in 2012, Elphick has gone on to feature 145 times, scoring six goals and assisting a further two.

The 28-year-old is well experienced in the Championship, playing in 85 games in England’s second tier during his career.

Aston Villa are looking to rebuild under new boss Roberto Di Matteo following their relegation from the Premier League last season.

They remain one of the favourites to secure an immediate return to the top flight, with some bookies offering odds of 11/4 for the West Midlands side to seal promotion.
