106-point Championship title winner set for Indian manager job

Steve Coppell, who won the Championship title at Reading in 2006 with 106 points, is set to become the new manager of Kerala Blasters (Sky Sports). Later this week, the former Manchester United player will be confirmed as boss of the Indian Super League side.

Ex-England goalkeeper David James and Football League veteran Peter Taylor have previously managed the club. They are co-owned by Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar.

Coppell was recently linked with a director of football role at Derby County, but is now likely to return to management.

60-year-old Coppell has been out of management since he held a director of football job with Portsmouth in 2014. Prior to this, he held a similar role with Crawley Town. His last outright management job came with Bristol City in 2010. When leaving Ashton Gate, he should he would be retiring from football management.

The Liverpool-born coach played over 300 times for Man Utd before moving into management in the 1980s. He had spells with Crystal Palace, Manchester City, Brentford and Brighton, before his successful Reading tenure.

The winger was capped over 40 times for the England national team as well.

He joins a Kerala Blasters side hoping to improve upon their eight place finish last season. Prior to this, they finished runners-up under ex-West Ham United goalkeeper James.
