Complications in La Liga club chase for Fulham defender

GetWestLondon reports that El Desmarque understands La Liga side Sporting Gijon are hoping to sign Fulham defender Fernando Amorebieta. However, the Spanish side are hoping to sign him on a free. Fulham would command a fee for his services.

The 31-year-old, who can play left back or centre back, still has a year remaining on his contract. Nevertheless, the Whites would want even a small fee for any transfer to take place.

The Venezuelan started last season on loan at Middlesbrough, before returning to Craven Cottage and playing 14 times from February onwards. It would appear that he isn’t in the plans of Slavisa Jokanovic. Since joining the club in May 2013, he has mainly lacked consistency.

During his time at the club, he has collected four red cards and has a big collection of yellow cards as well. He made a total of 31 appearances last season, which includes some international caps.

However, he has since retired from international duty to concentrate on club football.

Gijon are looking to bolster their own defence after only just narrowly escaped relegation by one point just season. Abelardo Fernandez is hoping Amorebieta is one of his summer recruits at El Molinon.

Amorebieta is certainly no stranger to life in Spain and in La Liga. He played over 200 times for Athletic Bilbao prior to joining Fulham. He was Europa League runner up during his eight season stay with the Basque club.
