Plymouth Argyle make Cambridge midfielder their first signing of summer

Plymouth Argyle have signed Ryan Donaldson from Cambridge United on a free transfer as confirmed by the club website.

The midfielder has been a key part of the Cambridge side for years and was instrumental in the season which saw the U’s gain promotion via the play offs from the Vanarama National and make their return to the Football League. He also helped Cambridge to win the FA Trophy that season and ended up making 110 appearances for them while also scoring 14 goals.

He continued to impress this season but decided to leave the Abbey Stadium and sign a deal of undisclosed length with Plymouth. This is the first signing that the Pilgrims have made since they lost 2-0 in the League 2 play off final against AFC Wimbledon and he comes with some pedigree after being capped at several levels of the England youth team.

Donaldson came through the Newcastle academy and was one of the few players who benefited from their relegation to the Championship in 2009 as it was that which gave him his first chance in the first team. After loan spells with Hartlepool United and Tranmere Rovers, Donaldson moved to Gateshead and impressed there before earning the move to Cambridge in 2013.
