In Demand Bristol Rovers striker will make decision soon

Bristol Rovers chairman Steve Hamer has said to Bristol Post that he expects Matty Taylor to make a decision on his future very soon.

The striker is currently one of the most in demand players in the Football League right now after he took League 2 by storm, helping Bristol Rovers get promoted to League 1.

And while the Gas would want to keep Taylor, who scores 27 goals on the way to claiming the League 2 golden boot, they are facing a tough task to hold onto him. After all, they have been unlucky to see Taylor become so in demand when he was out of contract, leading to a whole host of clubs chancing their arm and offering him a deal. If reports are correct, those clubs include Celtic, Hearts, Birmingham City and Aston Villa and it’s believed that many more also said to be interested.

And the nerves around the Memorial Stadium should be eased soon as the Rovers chairman Steve Hamer has said there should be a decision from him soon.

He said: “Matty is out of contract and has been offered what we consider a very fair and competitive contract,”

“If anyone saw the offer, I would suggest it would show them we wish to keep Matty at the club.

“But there are other clubs who may offer him a contract we would find difficult to afford.

“Ultimately, it’s his decision, but we have not been shy in offering Matty an opportunity to stay with us, because that is what we want to happen.

“However, if someone else is a lot bolder in terms of their offer, then unfortunately that is the market.”

“It’s a difficult one but we have to wait and see. One school of thought, I suppose, is that the longer we wait and we hear nothing, the more likely it is he might return.”

“I would imagine most teams will report back between late June and July 4, so inevitably we will hear one way or another – whether he is staying or whether he is going – very shortly.”
