Newcastle youngster could return to Coventry City

Coventry City technical director Mark Venus has revealed in comments made to the Coventry Telegraph that Newcastle United’s Gael Bigirimana could return to the club.

The 22-year-old midfielder moved back to the Sky Blues after coming through their academy on loan in November and went on to make 13 appearances for the club as they missed out on the play offs.

However Bigirimana faces some problems in the near future of his career. He hasn’t developed at Newcastle like the coaching staff expected him to and with just one year left on his contract, it is widely expected that he will leave the club this summer.

And Coventry seems to be the ideal place for Bigirimana to go should he leave St James Park this summer. However the move will depend on what happens to John Fleck. The Player of the Year for Coventry has been offered a new deal and should he turn that down, the West Midlands club will go in for Bigirimana as a replacement.

Venus said: “Gael has another year at Newcastle and I have spoken to them but I haven’t done anything concrete, just got a position from them and then it’s up to the gaffer really,”

“I think he would like to see where John [Fleck] ends up before he makes any moves in those positions.”

“Gael is a good pro; he came and had a little bit of a frustrating time and didn’t get enough minutes on the pitch as he would have liked.”

“But Gael has got talent and he’s only young. He’s played 20-odd games in the Premier League.”

“He left this club in the Championship and he ticks boxes to get the job done in this league but, again, it’s up to the gaffer.”
