Former favourite keen to join Newcastle coaching staff

Steve Watson, who played over 200 times for Newcastle United, has expressed his desire to return to the club as a coach. Speaking to Chronicle Live, the former defender spoke of how keen he would be to be a part of the club in some capacity alongside Rafa Benitez.

Since hanging up his boots in 2009, Watson served on the coaching staff alongside another ex-Newcastle player, Lee Clark, at both Huddersfield Town and Birmingham City. He has also been linked with several managerial jobs in non-league football as well.

North Shields-born Watson believes that he could offer something different alongside Spaniard Benitez at St James’ Park, as the Magpies look to gain promotion back into the Premier League at the first attempt,

“I would love to be part of the coaching team and getting the club where it should be.

“Obviously I am disappointed they have been relegated but I’m optimistic for them since the manager is staying.”

Watson was speaking at the opening of a local shop in the Newcastle area, with supporters still showing their fondness and appreciation. He remains a popular figure in and around the club, but the question is would Rafa Benitez be willing to bring someone of that nature in. The ex-Liverpool and Read Madrid manager is known as someone who likes to have his own staff around him, so may not necessarily be too keen on recruiting someone ‘from the outside’.

Still, if he was given a role, the Geordie faithful would love to see another of their own return to the club, especially someone from the good old days when Kevin Keegan was in charge first time around.
