No Villa interest in Premier League goalkeeper

The Birmingham Mail has dismissed suggestions that Aston Villa are lining up a move for West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Boaz Myhill. New Villa boss Roberto Di Matteo signed Myhill when he was Baggies manager in 2010, but isn’t likely to sign him again.

Although the Italian is said to be keen on recruiting a new goalkeeper, either as a replacement for or to provide direct competition for American international Brad Guzan, Myhill won’t be that man.

Tony Pulis has not received any offers for Myhill, who is again likely to serve as second choice behind Ben Foster next season at the Hawthorns. The former Stoke City manager is said to have been impressed with how Myhill performed when he stepped into the side last season when Foster was out injured for an extended period of time.

Last season, Myhill made 25 appearances for West Brom, taking his overall match tally for the club to 80.

Prior to joining WBA, he played over 250 times for Hull City in their rise through the divisions. He was once on the books at Aston Villa as a trainee, but never appeared in the first-team. During his time at Villa Park, he worked alongside the likes of Peter Schmeichel, Mark Bosnich and David James, but spent most of his time out on loan.

He’ll be hoping to challenge Foster for the number one jersey in the Premier League next season, but whilst he certainly has an admirer in Di Matteo, it won’t progress to the next level.
