Villa defender has options in Turkey and America

Clubs in the top divisions of Turkey and the United States are leading the way to sign under-fire Aston Villa defender Joleon Lescott, reports the Birmingham Mail.

The newspaper’s Villa reporter, Gregg Evans writes that a number of Major League Soccer (MLS) teams are interested in the 33-year-old, as well as Turkish giants Besiktas, although North America is the player’s preferred destination, although wages maybe a sticking point in any proposed move.

Evans said: “He (Lescott) has clubs interested in him in the MLS and I think Besiktas in Turkey are also looking at him.

“Lescott harbours ambitions of going over to America at some point in his career, but he has got a year left on his Villa deal on good money. He might not get that money in America so he might want to stick around.”

The former Wolves and West Brom centre half came under fire last season for Villa, firstly for an ill-advised tweet about a new car following a 6-0 drubbing at home to Liverpool and then for post-match comments about relegation being a ‘relief’ after the Villains’ fate was confirmed after a loss to Manchester United in April.

And it is not the first time that Lescott has been linked with a move to Besiktas. The England international was strongly rumoured to be heading to the club following the end of his Manchester City contract in 2014 but the move never materialised.

Besiktas may have their sights set on AC Milan’s Cristián Zapata as their first choice for a new centre half, which could put any proposed move for Lescott onto the backburner for the time being.
