Bristol City close to Sunderland full back

Adam Matthews appears to be on his way to Bristol City as Sunderland close in on French full back Jeremy Pied of Nice.

Matthews impressed for City at the end of last season on loan from Sunderland and appears to be moving closer to a permanent deal, according to The Bristol Post.

Matthews signed for Sunderland from Celtic but has really struggled to displace Spurs loanee DeAndre Yedlin this last year and looks set to leave.

He has been moved down the pecking order by Billy Jones and with Allardyce desperate to sign another full back, Matthews looks almost certain to be on his way out.

Matthews is a Welsh international with two years left on his contract – and as such would command a fee, but Bristol City appear ready to spend this summer and the full back might be one of the first deals of the summer.

Sunderland face some competition for the signing of Pied, with St Etienne and West Ham also monitoring the situation of the out of contract full back.

Matthews played 150 times for Celtic in four years, where he was a very reliable performer, but couldn’t make more than one appearance in a whole season for Sunderland.
