Wolves sign former Preston goalkeeper

Wolves have signed Andy Lonergan from Fulham for an undisclosed fee as confirmed by the club website.

The Black County club had made getting a new keeper to challenge current number one Carl Ikeme a priority and had initially targeted Shrewsbury Town’s Jayson Leutwiler but any hopes of signing him ended when he penned a new long term deal with the Shrews.

But now Wolves have finally got a new keeper after they managed to get Lonergan to pen a two year contract with the option of another.

The 32-year-old keeper is widely experienced in the Championship having competed for several clubs at this level. He made his debut as a 16-year-old back in 2000 for Preston North End and went on to make 232 appearances for them in an eleven year period as well as winning two player of the season awards. Since then Lonergan has been a journeyman and has competed for Leeds United, Bolton Wanderers and most recently Fulham.

After the signing, Wolves head coach Kenny Jackett said: “I am very pleased to add a player of Andy’s advice and experience to the goalkeeping department,”

“His arrival will complement Carl Ikeme and Jon Flatt in the upcoming season.”
