Birmingham approach Derby over permanent deal for defender

Birmingham City have made contact with Derby County over the possibility of agreeing a deal to sign defender Ryan Shotton on a permanent basis. The Birmingham Mail reports that the Blues have made initial contact to see if Shotton, who ended last season on loan at St Andrews, can join full time.

The 27-year-old, who started his career at Stoke City, is said to be open to the prospect of linking up with Gary Rowett’s men on a long-term basis.

During his loan stint last season, Shotton made nine appearances, scoring one goal in the process, that coming in the 2-0 away victory at Reading in April. The highlights of that game can be seen in the video at the bottom of this page.

Derby find themselves under new management after former Leicester City manager Nigel Pearson was unveiled in the job last week. He will want to run the rule over the player before deciding on his future. However if he is not in his plans, Shotton has his heart set on a move to Birmingham.

The majority of Shotton’s career has been spent out on loan at various clubs. During his time on the books at the Brittania Stadium, he had five loan spells away from the club. The last of those was Derby, before that deal was made permanent in January 2015.
