Fulham set to steal Celtic star as contract talks breakdown

Fulham look set to take advantage of the situation developing at Parkhead as midfielder Stefan Johansen appears to be stalling over a new contract.

With only a year left remaining on his contract, the 25 year old Norwegian has not agreed to any contract extension with the Glasgow club as of yet.

A victim of the boo boys at Celtic, the midfielder has not had the best of seasons with the Hoops and could be allowed to go for as little as £2m this summer.

Fulham boss Slavisa Jokanovic is keeping an eye on developments and would presumably be interested in a deal for the Norwegian for an amount so low.

Recognising the rewards that promotion to the Premier League brings, the Fulham owner Shahid Khan has told manager Jokanovic to aim high with transfer targets and has pledged to throw money behind Fulham’s quest to get back in the Premier League, with Johansen reportedly high on Jokanovic’s list.

Fulham struggled to a bottom half finish last season despite having one of the top scorers in the division in Ross McCormack in the team.

Johansen was PFA player of the year in 2014/15 but his form last season faded and he could be looking to resurrect his career south of the border in the English capital. It is unlikely he would lose out financially and with Brendan Rodgers arriving he may fall out of favour as it is expected that Rodgers will assemble his own side at Celtic.

Aston Villa were interested last season, as were some Bundesliga clubs but as Johansen’s form faded, so did the interest from other clubs.

Boss Jokanovic is set to ruthlessly restructure Fulham’s squad as a poor finish of 20th place last season confirmed the need to bring in fresh talent. He said. “We need to rebuild the team. It’s not one or two players and it’s not just one or two positions. We need to change everything. We need to show ambition in the transfer market.”

The London club will be desperately hoping that the £12m release clause for star striker Ross Mccormack is not met by anyone and that they can build a promotion winning team around him for next season.
