Koeman set to make Newcastle United star his first signing

Ronald Koeman could be set to make Newcastle United star Georginio Wijnaldum his first signing for Everton, according to The Sun.

Koeman reportedly agreed to take over as Everton boss today, leaving just a settlement with Southampton to be agreed before the Dutchman is announced.

It is understood that Koeman has been a big fan of Wijnaldum for quite some time, and has tried to sign the playmaker for Southampton in the past.

To add to the speculation, Wijnaldum last week hinted that he would not be staying at Newcastle this summer, and instead would look for a move away from the club.

Newcastle splashed out £14.5 million for Wijnaldum last summer to sign the midfielder from PSV Eindhoven.  With Koeman having a reported £50 million to spend, Newcastle may demand a similar fee this summer.

Wijnaldum scored 11 goals for Newcastle last season, but was unable to prevent the club from suffering relegation from the Premier League.  Despite the disappointing season, Wijnaldum was definitely one of the club’s best players last year.

It is believed that Arsenal, Everton, Southampton, Sunderland and West Brom have all already scouted Wijnaldum this summer.

The midfielder said of his future: “Of course I want to play at as high a level as possible, in the Premier League, with a beautiful club – but not everything always goes the way you want. I will see what happens.

“The strange thing is that I have very nice statistics for a midfielder, despite relegation. I was one of the best midfielders in the Premier League, only the numbers were worthless. That was a shame.”
