Huddersfield Town sign Oldham goalkeeper

Huddersfield Town have signed Joel Coleman from Oldham Athletic for an undisclosed fee as confirmed by the club website.

The Terriers had made signing a new goalkeeper one of their number one priorities this season after Jed Steer returned to his parent club Aston Villa after his loan ended and Joe Murphy remaining out for a number of months due to injury. And after much searching and speculation they have got their man after Coleman penned a three year deal with the club.

Coleman had come through the Oldham academy and broke through into the first team and got his chance after an injury to their usual number one Jake Kean. A number of impressive performances from Coleman made the number one jersey his and became the usual starter for the club last season. Despite a season where Oldham battled against relegation, Coleman continued to impress and show he was one of the most talented young keepers in the country.

After signing Coleman, Huddersfield head coach David Wagner said,

“Recruiting goalkeepers has been a big priority for the Club in this transfer window due to Jed Steer’s return to Aston Villa and Joe Murphy’s injury. Joel’s arrival is an important part of this at First Team level.

“Joel will arrive at the Club to challenge for the number one position and with potential to develop into a fantastic goalkeeper. It is unusual for a goalkeeper aged 20 to have Joel’s First Team experience and he has shown lots of potential in his performances for Oldham, which we have watched closely.

“Obviously a goalkeeper must be excellent at the fundamentals of the position first – keeping the ball out of the net – but Joel’s ability with the ball at his feet is also ideal for our style of play.

“We’re all excited at working with Joel on the training pitch and in games for the next three years, at least.”
