Wimbledon boost new stadium hopes by selling Kingsmeadow to Chelsea

AFC Wimbledon’s hopes of moving into a new stadium have been given a boost after they sold their current home Kingsmeadow to Chelsea for £2million according to a report from the London Evening Standard.

The Dons have been hoping to build a new stadium back in their native home Plough Lane and will be using the £2million from the sale the ground to help them fund the move.

Chelsea are hoping to use the 4,800 capacity Kingsmeadow as their permanent ground for their academy and ladies matches. Currently the Chelsea U21s usually at Aldershot Town’s Recreation Ground in Hampshire while the Ladies compete at Wheatsheaf Park, the home of Staines Town.

However with their still being uncertainty over planning permission for Plough Lane, the completion of the deal will depend on that. While Merton Council did grant the club planning permission, the then London Mayor Boris Johnson called it back in and it still sits with the current mayor Sadiq Khan.

Following the announcement, Wimbledon’s chief executive Martin Samuelson said: “This is a major milestone for us. The proceeds of this deal are an essential part of the financing of the new stadium. The vision of a return to Merton, with all the community benefits it also brings, is now becoming very real.”
