From Champions League success to the Championship – the life of Di Matteo

It was announced earlier this week that Roberto Di Matteo would be the new man in charge at Villa Park.

Known by many in this country as the man who finally won the Champions League with Chelsea, Di Matteo has been well travelled in both his playing career, and as a manager.

The Italian manager was born in Switzerland, and began his professional playing career with Swiss side Schaffhausen.

He played 50 games for the club, scoring just two goals. He signed for FC Zurich in 1991, where he played 34 games, finding the net six times.

He joined another Swiss side FC Aurau in 1992, where he won the Swiss Nationalliga A, as well as the Player of the year award.

He scored just one goal in 33 games for the club, before making a move to Italy to join Lazio.

During his time at Lazio, he made his debut for Italy.

He scored seven times in 87 games for the Italian club.

He moved to Chelsea in 1996, where he spent the rest of his playing career.

He played for the London club 119 times, scoring 26 goals.

The Italian manager represented his country 34 times, scoring just the two.

Di Matteo’s managerial debut came in 2008, when he took over from Paul Ince at MK Dons.

He only spent one season at the club, where he led them to third place, behind Leicester City and Peterborough United.

In 2009, Di Matteo took charge of West Brom, who had just been relegated to the Championship.

Di Matteo was able to take them up at the first time of asking, finishing second behind Newcastle United.

He lost his job in February 2011, following a run of one win in 10 Premiership games.

In 2011, Di Matteo joined former club Chelsea as assistant manager. Following the sacking of Andre Villas-Boas in March 2012, Di Matteo took temporary charge of the club.

His performance at the end of the 2011/12 as temporary manager of Chelsea saw him win the FA Cup, and the Champions League.

He was given the job on a permanent basis for the start of the 2012/12 season, but only lasted until November before he was sacked.

He joined Schalke in 2014, becoming only the third manager to take charge in the Bundesliga. He resigned in May 2015, after leading the side to a sixth place finish.

So what’s next for Roberto Di Matteo? Can he succeed at Aston Villa, or is this one challenge to much for him?
