League One champions Wigan Athletic have confirmed their retained list after they sealed instant promotion back into the second tier at the first attempt. Gary Caldwell has offered new deals to two, whilst four have been let go.
Stephen Warnock is set to be added to next season’s squad on a permanent basis. He ended last season on loan from Derby, who released him this summer, meaning he is in line to move to the DW Stadium.
Three of the four to go are all experienced professionals that enjoyed their fair share of football with Caldwell’s men last season. Centre back Leon Barnett leaves the club having made 16 League One starts last season. He moves on having joined in August 2013 when signing from Norwich City.
Right back Reece Wabara may only be 24 but he has played a considerable amount of football in his career. He enjoyed a good run in the Wigan side at one point last season, starting 14 matches in the end. The former Manchester City youngster is free to find himself a new club.
Another full back in the form of Kevin McNaughton leaves after just one season. He has spent the vast majority of his career at Cardiff City, before making the move to the Latics last summer. Injury problems have hampered his progress.
Completing the list of those to leave is Ryan Jennings.
Ex-Burnley man Chris McCann has been offered a new deal by Caldwell. He started 31 of their 46 league games last season, so is clearly a key player. Also offered an extension is Wigan-born forward Jordan Flores.
