How Championship Play Off Final losers fared the next season

Sheffield Wednesday fans, I imagine you are hurting right now. After all, you were 90 minutes from getting back into the Premier League and now you have to go again in the Championship, it’s tough.

The thing right now that the Owls need is hope, hope that they can go one better next season and get into the Premier League. So to see if that is possible, we have looked at the last ten years of play off losers to see how they fared the season after.

Middlesbrough – 2014/15

After finishing 4th in the Championship, Middlesbrough made it to the play off final before putting up a limp performance against Norwich City in the final and lost 2-0.

The next season was great for the Boro though as they bounced back after making some big name signings in the summer and went on to finish 2nd this season, getting promotion back to the Premier League.

Derby County – 2013/14

This one stung. After finishing 3rd, Derby bounced back and managed to get in the play off final. Despite being the better team, they couldn’t score and QPR managed to sneak one at the end to win, leaving the Rams in the 2nd tier.

The next season saw Derby start strong like they would bounce back before doing what is known in the business as a bottle drop and falling to 8th place. They then sacked Steve McClaren and appointed Paul Clement as his replacement, which went really well.
