Mark Beevers insists Millwall will be stronger next time

Millwall’s Mark Beevers has insisted in comments made to the South London Press that the club will be stronger next season after they lost in the play off final.

After a tough season many Lions fans were hoping that they could make a swift return to the Championship in Sunday’s play off final. For Beevers the game had a bit of extra spice because he was born in Barnsley and his family supports the club.

And while Beevers did score to get one back for Millwall, Barnsley never really looked troubled as they eased to a 3-1 win which took them back into the Championship while Millwall will have to go again. And unfortunately for the South London club, their efforts will be most likely be forgotten due to a small number of fans who broke through police lines in order to chase Barnsley fans out of the stadium.

But despite this gutting loss, Beevers believes that Millwall will be back stronger next year. He said: “This season has been a massive step forward.”

“We have bonded as a team. Each game we played, we thought we could win. There have been times throughout this season where we have looked good enough to go up.”

“That speaks volumes for these lads. We know what we can do – create chances and keep clean sheets. It fell for Barnsley on Sunday – it was not our day.”

“Losing Byron Webster before kick-off could have caused disruption but that’s football – you have to deal with it.”

“The lads were devastated for him. But Tony Craig is experienced enough for that situation.”

“It is nice to score at Wembley. But I would much rather we had won.”

“We were on top in the first half and know we have the quality to do damage.”

“We came out in the second half and did our best but it was not to be. It was disappointing but we will come back at the end of the summer and look to go again.”
