Bristol City near signing of Barnsley promotion winner

The Bristol Post understands that Bristol City are closing in on the signing of Preston North End midfielder Josh Brownhill. The 20-year-old ended last season winning the League One Play-Off Final whilst on loan at Barnsley.

The Warrington-born youngster was offered a two-year contract extension by Simon Grayson at Preston, but he looks set to reject that in favour of joining up with Lee Johnson at Ashton Gate.

Compensation would need to be agreed as the player is under the age of 24. It is understood that the Robins are in negotiations to come to an agreement to bring Brownhill to the club.

There were rumours that Brownhill would look to make his Barnsley loan move permanent, especially in the wake of their promotion following the Play-Off Final victory against Millwall on Sunday. However, Brownhill has since tweeted his thanks to everyone at Barnsley, indicating a move elsewhere is highly likely.

The signing of Brownhill would be Johnson’s first signing of the summer ahead of next season, where he is looking to guide the club to a league table finish much higher, after only just avoiding relegation back into League One last year.

It was Johnson would signed Brownhill for Barnsley in a loan deal before he left to take up the managerial vacancy at Bristol City the following month.

Brownhill made his debut for Preston in 2013, and has mainly been a fringe player at Deepdale, although he has enjoyed runs in the team at various points. His game time has reduced in each of the last three seasons with the Lilywhites, and he is keen on playing regular football.
