Will Grigg’s On Fire sets the music charts alight

Inspired by avid Wigan Athletic fan Sean Kennedy, the chant that’s swept the nation in tribute to Latics star striker Will Grigg has now been released as an official single.

Grigg netted 28 goals in 43 games in all competition during the 2015/16 season, as the Latics surged to the League One title, and promotion to the Championship.

Adapted from the October 1996 track ‘Freed from Desire’ by Italian singer Gala, the chant that started off in the home of Wiganer Sean Kennedy soon spread to the DW terraces in the final weeks of the 2016 season.

Not long after, the popular tune caught fire, finding itself being sung the length and breadth of the UK, becoming a viral sensation in the process, elevating Grigg from local hero to national celebrity status.

Even rival teams have adopted the Wigan related chant, with Premier League bound Hull City players jubilantly belting out the tune during their dressing room celebrations following The Tigers’ 1-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship playoff final.

Now off to the European Championships with the Northern Ireland squad, Grigg will be hoping to continue the surging run of scoring form displayed in his side’s 3-0 friendly win over Belarus on Friday, in which the 24-year-old netted his first national team goal to seal victory in emphatic style.

When it appeared the chant couldn’t become even more popular, news appeared in the last week that chart topping House music duo Blonde would be officially producing a single dedicated to Sean Kennedy’s viral song, with all proceeds from the song going to Wigan-based charity Joseph’s Goal.

Upon its release on Tuesday morning, the track soon surged up the iTunes charts, now being on the verge of breaking the UK top 10.

With the chant now on constant repeat in the head’s of football fans across the nation, the Wigan striker knows he has to keep scoring for the chant to continue:

“I’ve also got to keep up with the song – if I stop scoring, the song stops, so I’ve still got to keep scoring to make it carry on.”
