5 Derby matches not to be missed next season

With the season now officially over, the line-up for the 2016/17 Football League season has been confirmed.

With all the promotions and relegations, there will be some matches between rivals that haven’t taken place for at least a season.

We took a look at a selection of derby matches/rivalries that will be re-ignited during the 2016/17 season.

Aston Villa v Birmingham

Known as the second city derby, this fixture will always be one to watch. Aston Villa’s abysmal season in the Premiership this season saw them relegated to the Championship for the first time in their history. Birmingham had a solid season in the Championship, but were unable to mount a push for the play-offs, and will remain in the second tier. Although they met in the League Cup last season, these two fierce rivals haven’t met in the League since Birmingham City’s relegation in 2011. I, for one, cannot wait for this fixture.

Charlton v Millwall

These two clubs hate each other. South London rivals, there’s often trouble when these two sides play each other, and they will meet in the 2016/17 season. Charlton’s relegation from the Championship was confirmed a long time ago, but Millwall’s defeat against Barnsley in the League One Play Off final means they’ll be meeting Charlton in the coming campaign. It certainly will be the tastiest rivalry in League One next season, taking over from Fylde coast rivals Blackpool and Fleetwood.
