Leeds United: new name enters manager race

Faith No More once sang a song called “From Out of Nowhere” that was on their 1989 album ‘The Real Thing’ and that is what has happened to the Leeds United manager race.

Whilst many Leeds fans may have faith no more, it seems that one name has come from out of nowhere with SkyBet installing Francesco Marroccu as a 16/1 shot for the Leeds United manager’s job, currently held by Steve Evans who is still the Evens favourite to retain his position for the start of the 2016/17 Championship campaign.

Earlier on The72, we wrote about an article appearing on Italian website TUTTOmercatoWEB (TMW) regarding the job position of Ascoli’s sporting director Francesco Marroccu who TMW said was close to waving goodbye to the Italian Serie B side after they’d managed to retain their second tier status.

On there we postulated that Massimo Cellino, who has self-admittedly been in Italy all last week and who had told the Mirror that he was, “in Italy meeting another coach before I decide,” might well be tapping up Marroccu to take over as sporting director at Elland Road, filling the shoes of fellow countryman Nicola Salerno who left after the incident that saw then-assistant coach Steve Thompson fired.

However, SkyBet have gone a step further and put him into the field on contenders to be given the manager/head coach role at Elland Road with odds of 16/1 being available on him. To put that into perspective somewhat, those odds are equal to odds for Neil Lennon and better lower than those that SkyBet have given against both Walter Zenga (18/1) and David O’Leary (20/1).

Addendum: as of 20:10 on 30.05.2016 the name of Francesco Marroccu disappeared altogether from the Skybet odds list
