Accrington want compensation after finding out about transfer on Twitter

Accrington Stanley want compensation from League Two side Doncaster Rovers after finding out that goalkeeper Ross Etheridge had signed for the club via Twitter, according to The Sun.

Etheridge joined Accrington on a free transfer last summer but has now confirmed his departure from the League Two side after only one season.

Etheridge began his career with Derby County, but failed to make a senior league appearance for the club.  The goalkeeper was loaned out several times, including playing for Stalybridge Celtic in the Conference North.

Derby released Etheridge at the end of last season and he signed for Accrington Stanley on a one-year deal.

Etheridge has impressed this season for Accrington, being one of the team who managed to secure a play-off place but perhaps deserved much more.  A goalless draw on the last day of the season meant that Accrington would have to settle for the play-offs despite spending much of the season in the automatic promotion places.

Accrington Stanley offered Etheridge a contract extension, but the goalkeeper instead opted to sign for recently-relegated side Doncaster Rovers.  This means that the goalkeeper will face his former side in the league next season, after Accrington exited the play-offs in the semi-finals.

It is understood that Accrington were not informed that Etheridge would be rejecting their contract offer, and only found out when the news of the goalkeeper signing for Doncaster was announced on Twitter.  As Etheridge is under the age of 24 and was offered a new deal by Accrington, Doncaster will have to pay compensation.

Etheridge’s move leaves Accrington without a senior goalkeeper on their books, after the club released Jason Mooney this week.
